Sandhills Energy & OPPD Advancing Two Nebraska Solar Projects

Sandhills Energy is expanding its work with Omaha Public Power District through two Nebraska solar projects: a 250-megawatt power purchase agreement (PPA) for Burt County Solar and a separate agreement to assume responsibility for K-Junction Solar in York County.

OPPD & Sandhills Energy

Burt County Solar

The Burt County Solar Project represents one of the largest solar installations in the Sandhills Energy portfolio. OPPD expects the project, which will be located east of Tekamah, Nebraska, to be operational in 2029. It will generate enough electricity to power approximately 50,000 homes.

“We are working hard to ensure our customers have the electricity they need when they need it. Reliability is at the core of all we do,” said OPPD President and CEO Javier Fernandez, in OPPD’s press release. “By continuing to add a variety of new generation sources to our energy portfolio, we’re helping to ensure our system can perform under a wide range of market conditions and weather scenarios.”

Burt County Solar is also expected to bring over $20 million in local tax revenue during its operational lifetime. Local revenue from solar projects like this are another way that rural communities benefit from renewable energy infrastructure

Next Phase for K-Junction Solar

K-Junction Solar is a separate project in York County. Under a new agreement with OPPD, Sandhills Energy is assuming responsibility for K-Junction LLC and subsequent development work for the project.

Sandhills Energy’s role reflects its focus on Nebraska communities and renewable energy projects shaped by the places they serve.

“Sandhills Energy has worked alongside local leaders and rural communities across the Midwest to bring renewable energy projects to life,” said Eric Johnson, Sandhills Energy President. “We understand that every community is different, and we look forward to working with the people of York to discuss how renewable energy can support local goals while respecting the values of the people who live there.”

Partnership with Public Power

The work between Sandhills Energy and OPPD reflects the kind of utility partnership Sandhills Energy values: collaborative, practical, and focused on local energy projects. By working closely with utility companies, Sandhills Energy helps align renewable energy development with generation planning, community priorities, and long-term reliability goals.

“This agreement provides OPPD a responsible path forward while allowing an experienced Nebraska developer to move ahead with the project,” said Joe Lang, director of OPPD’s Generation Strategy and Origination team.

Additional project details are available in OPPD’s announcement.
