Reliable Solutions for Sustainable Energy
Timeline
2017 – Present
Project Name
Kimball
Location
Kimball County, Nebraska
The Problem
Originally constructed in 2002, the Kimball wind farm is located at Nebraska’s highest elevation. The 10.5 MW first-generation wind farm needed a rebuild that could take full advantage of the latest technology and power facilities.
The Solution
Kimball Wind LLC is now a 30MW wind farm in Kimball County, Nebraska. This repowered facility, developed by Sandhills Energy LLC and acquired by Aspenall Energies in 2017, is a testament to the latest advancements in wind energy technology.
The project received final permitting approval third quarter 2017 and commenced construction shortly thereafter. On June 29th, 2018 the facility began commercial generation. The project will supply enough annual energy to power approximately 11,000 homes.
The project includes the decommissioning of the existing Kimball Wind Farm, erected in 2002.
Kimball Wind represents the first re-powering of a utility-scale wind farm in Nebraska. The original 10.5 MW Kimball wind farm was constructed in 2002, by the Municipal Energy Agency of Nebraska (MEAN).
This first-generation wind facility delivered clean energy to MEAN members for nearly fifteen years. Sandhills Energy recognized an opportunity to rebuild the facility with modern, larger-diameter machines and expand the facility to take advantage of the wind resource available at the State’s highest elevation. Sandhills Energy won a competitive solicitation held by MEAN to decommission the first-generation farm and construct a new facility.
The Outcome
With strong local support and a clear demonstration of statewide demand for renewable energy, the project stands as a shining example of how older facilities in Nebraska can be repowered to take advantage of current technology and Nebraska’s strong wind resources. This collective effort is a testament to the community’s commitment to a sustainable future.
